Lewa Downs Sanctuary

At the foothill of Mt. Kenya lies a treasure that goes beyond conceivable thought. Lewa Downs Sanctuary is a heaven for the one time almost extinct African rhino. Initially a vast ranching area, Lewa Downs Sanctuary at an altitude of 6,000ft, is now a conservation centre run by the initially ranching families in company of the surrounding communities.

The days are spent in nature hikes, horseback trails, bush drives or just engaging in chores at the conservation centre. Evenings are cool and crisp filled with memorable activities such as story telling by the campfire or having a ‘sun downer’ atop of Tim’s Hill situated at the centre of Lewa from which one has a beautiful view of the sanctuary, the bordering mountains and valleys to the north, and Mount Kenya to the east.

At Lewa one has a promise a fantastic time with both the people from the surrounding communities and the array of wildlife that range from elephants, zebras, hyenas, waterbuck and impala amongst many others. Once in the sanctuary one never wishes to leave.
