KAREN BLIXEN MUSEUM

The Karen Blixen Museum, located approximately 10 kilometers from Nairobi’s city center at the foot of the Ngong Hills, offers a glimpse into the life of the renowned Danish author Karen Blixen, best known for her memoir “Out of Africa.”

Historical Background:

Built in 1912 by Swedish engineer Åke Sjögren, the bungalow-style house was purchased in 1917 by Karen Blixen and her husband, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, with the intention of establishing a coffee plantation. Following their separation in 1921, Karen Blixen managed the farm until 1931, when she returned to Denmark. Her experiences during this period are vividly recounted in “Out of Africa” and “Shadows on the Grass.”

After Blixen’s death in 1962, the Danish government gifted the house to Kenya in 1964. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1986, following the release of the film adaptation of “Out of Africa.”

Museum Experience:

Visitors can explore the preserved rooms, which feature both original decor and props from the 1985 film. The expansive gardens display original farming equipment, and a nature trail offers a serene environment for reflection, with views of the Ngong Hills.
